Fargo

When thinking about the best way to describe this film, a somewhat cliche' statement comes to mind: It's a Coen Brother's Film.

Directed by Joel Coen, and written by both brothers, this film takes up 'up nord' to experience a little tale of fate, and murder. To me, this seems like the best way to blurb into the review here. I personally didn't care for the film, but I think that comes from my somewhat dislike of the Coen brothers. Though I found it amusing, there were aspects about it I just couldn't get into. And here's why:

Like most Coen brothers films, the plot revolves mostly around the characters, and not the plot itself (if that makes sense; it's early yet... give me some time.) A mid-40's man seems to be in financial trouble, although we never really get to hear why. He comes up with a scheme to have his wife abducted, and have her father pay a hansom ransom, pocketing the cash. Seems like a decent little flick plot. But what makes it work for most people?

This film is filled with cliche northern culture. "Oh yah!" and "don't ya knows" fill the films dialogue, as the characters seek out the murderers, and the location of the missing cash. Though these characters are certainly colorful, I'm not sure that they have the depth to really draw me into their world. Simply giving them an accent isn't going to bring me anything outside of a struggle to understand what they're saying.

It's not a bad film, and I want to say that again and again. I feel that I have somewhat been bias, as I've had bad experiences with the Coen brothers previous work, and thus might have been tainted. However, I felt that the plot, though entertaining through Steve Buscemi's performance, and William H. Macey's struggle to find his answers, wasn't enough to carry the film high enough for me.

It's a flick, as someone said to me, and that truly is the best description. If you're interested in a little murder mystery, with some heavy northern US accents, with a bit of comedy, then perhaps this is a good rent. For me, I found it mildly entertaining, as I did the Big Lebowski. Each film had its moments. They just didn't add up for me. 6 of 10.
